Distinguished and Famous people from Ingham
🌟 Sir Arthur Fadden
Arthur Fadden was born in Ingham, although his schooling and early work took place around Walkerston and Mackay. He trained in accountancy before entering local, state and federal politics. His brief prime ministership in 1941 ended when his government lost parliamentary support, but he later served for many years as treasurer in Robert Menzies’ government. Ingham’s place in the biography is a clear birthplace connection, preceding a working and political life that developed across other Queensland communities and in Canberra.
🤝 Charles Harris
Charles Harris was born at Victoria Estate near Ingham in 1931 and attended Victoria Plantation State School. Work in the cane fields and on the railways preceded religious study, and he later returned to Ingham as a canecutter while preaching in his spare time. In 1967 he joined the local Methodist ministry team with responsibility for Aboriginal and Islander people in the district. He went on to help establish the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress and organise the 1988 Long March for Freedom, Justice, and Hope. His national leadership grew from a life with substantial local roots in work, schooling and community service.
